Controlling Organized Crime

Organized crime can have a number of different definitions, depending on the organization or academic person defining it.  The FBI defines organized crime as a iniquitous enterprise involving a group of individuals with an identified hierarchy or comparable anatomical structure engaged in significant criminal activity (Lyman & angstrom unit; Potter, 2007).   The Continuing Criminal Enterprise Act defines a criminal enterprise (Organized Crime) as any group of six or more people where one of the individuals is in a space of organizer or supervisor (boss). This group generates substantial income or resources and is engaged in a continued series of violations of the law (Mallory, 2007).



 
Many theories suggested as reasons for people joining organized crime can help society, law enforcement, investigateers, and professionals provide causes and solutions for the existence of crime organizations. Most of the theories can be supported with good arguments, facts, and research that offer a reason people join organized crime groups. A few of the more popular theories argon the social control theory, differential association theory, and the alien conspiracy theory (Mallory, 2007).
