The theme of revenge is vital to the hearten and thither are four cases of revenge - three involving living characters: Fortinbras, Laertes and Hamlet. The two court families, 1 Royal and the other in Royal service, are colligate initially by Hamlets love for Ophelia, but as the play develops, these links become more difficult and more sinister, until there are a bloodlessly collision which leaves in decease and multiple tragedies.
There is an antagonist either Polonius or Hamlet from the outset, as Hamlet sees himself as a victim of Poloniuss back of Claudius as King. This adds to the sense of betrayal which he already feels as a result of his mothers actions. Polonius is keen to keep his position and to a fault show a mistrust of Hamlets intentions towards his daughter, Ophelia, forbidding her to see the prince and ulterior using her as a way of tranceting Hamlet to suck up to himself further to Claudius by proving that Hamlets madness is the result of love.
The relations between the two are characterized by a tension only partly masked by mode and sarcasm on Hamlets part. Hamlet is a victim of Laertes, alike when he mistakenly murders Polonius and anger Laertes to seek revenge for his dead father and in Ophelia we see Hamlet become a victim to her representation of womankind in the nunnery scene.
Ironically, though, each member of the Polonius family is to a fault a victim of Hamlet; Polonius literally murdered by the Prince, Laertes also killed by accident in the duel scene and Ophelia driven to madness by Hamlets spitefulness and the death of her father at her lovers hands.
